Everyone has an opinion about Tesla’s Cybertruck and Elon Musk. Some people think the Cybertruck is ugly, others are obsessed. Some can’t get over Tesla’s chief executive, and thus, won’t give it a second look. This writer, for one, thinks Cybertrucks are awesome. More so after taking Cybertruck for a test drive through Aventura, Florida and researching its capabilities. Maybe it’s that the Cybertruck is so ugly, it’s cute— you know, like a French bulldog, the hottest craze in “designer dogs” in 2024. No matter your opinion on how ugly a Cybertruck is, or your take on Tesla’s genius chief executive, Elon Musk, one thing is for certain—Tesla Cybertrucks are state of the art. They also are proving to be very safe vehicles for its occupants.

Is the Cybertruck safe? Is the Cybertruck Ugly?
From a Miami personal injury lawyer’s opinion, you can’t beat the Cybertruck from a personal vehicle standpoint when it comes to crush damage and intrusion into the passenger compartment. The leading cause of car accident serious injury and death is blunt force trauma. The more severe the impact, the more crush damage occurs, thereby decreasing survival rates. Brain injuries and internal bleeding from vital organs are caused by such traumatic blunt forces on the body and head. What better way to prevent such crush damage and injury to passengers than having no crush damage? The sheer size and weight of the Cybertruck’s steal body accounts for it being tough as nails. It performs well in a collision. This was evidenced by the remnants of the Cybertruck that was detonated in front of Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. The entire steal frame remained intact and was attributed to saving lives. It contained the explosive force and materials within the bed compartment rather than its frame becoming part of the shrapnel as shown in the photo below courtesy of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Elon Musk proudly tweeted on X soon after the attack “The evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken,”. This fact was corroborated in a public news conference by Las Vegas Sheriff “You’ll see if you look on the outside of that vehicle … there’s no evidence of physical damage to the sides of that vehicle. So, the explosion that was in that vehicle sort of vented out and up. It didn’t even damage the glass doors at the Trump,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a news conference the day following the exploision.
There you have it. The Cybertruck is a safe passenger vehicle. At Perkins Law Offices, where we recognized among the best personal injury lawyers in Miami, Fl, we see the implications of such advanced vehicles from a road safety and personal injury law perspective. While the Cybertruck provides protection in crashes, that same solid build could lead to increase injuries and death if you are another vehicle or pedestrian on the receiving end of a Cybertuck impact. The efficacy of the self-driving aspect of the Cybertruck is a different safety subject. However, initial numbers of self-driving accidents seems low considereing the vast number of Tesla’s and the propensity for irresponsible drivers to not follow Tesla’s rules for the road regarding that software. For the purpose of this article discusses more of the benefits of all of Cybertruck’s safety mechanisms due to its robust build.
Safety Features of the Cybertruck
Collision Avoidance Systems:
- Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): Detects potential collisions and automatically applies the brakes if needed.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Alerts drivers through visual and audible signals when there’s a high risk of a frontal crash.
- Obstacle-Aware Acceleration: This feature reduces acceleration if an object is detected in the immediate path of travel, enhancing safety in close quarters.
Active Safety Features:
- Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist: These systems help maintain the vehicle within its lane, reducing the likelihood of accidents due to unintentional lane drifting.
- Adaptive Cruise Control: Automatically adjusts speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, potentially reducing rear-end collisions.
Monitoring Systems:
- Cameras and Sensors: The Cybertruck is equipped with multiple cameras and sensors to monitor both the interior and exterior environment. These systems not only aid in navigation but also in accident reconstruction, providing valuable evidence in legal scenarios.
- Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD): While these features are continuously evolving, they aim to reduce human error in driving, potentially decreasing accident rates. However, they also introduce new complexities in liability determination.
Car Accidents with Cybertrucks
The Cybertruck’s Exoskeleton Design is made from ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel, which not only provides a unique, durable exterior but also aims to offer superior crash protection. This material is claimed to be bulletproof, highlighting its strength. You can also opt for bullet proof glass but you cannot roll the windows down if you get that aftermarket option. The glass it comes with is shatterproof which should reduce laceration injuries in accidents. While the steel is incredibly strong, repairs in conventional body shops can be challenging due to its rigidity.
The lack of traditional crumple zones, which are designed to absorb impact in crashes, has sparked some debate over occupant and pedestrian safety. Time will tell how it performs but there are not enough statistics out there just yet for this writer to make that call. I’d rather be on the inside of a Cybertruck in most types of car accidents. I have seen a lot of different collisions as a car accident lawyer in Miami so that is based on firsthand knowledge. South Florida probably has one of the most amount of Cybertrucks on the road as they are flashy and we have a lot of flashy people.
The vehicle’s design requires specialized tools and techniques for repair, potentially increasing costs and time for accident recovery. Unclear to me how insurance carriers and Tesla for that matter are handling such repairs and costs thereof. So while Cybertruck’s structure might offer enhanced protection for its occupants due to its strong frame, the lack of traditional crumple zones could mean that in high-speed or severe impacts, the energy might not be dissipated as effectively, potentially leading to different injury dynamics compared to conventional vehicles. Sometimes we use biomechanical experts in personal injury cases to illustrate to a jury how the body moved inside the vehicle to cause certain injuries. Due to its weight and potential speed, an irresponsible driver could pose significant risks to pedestrians or other road users. The vehicle’s design, including sharp edges, could exacerbate injury in collisions. Hopefully the collision avoidance system reduces the overall number of accident Cybertrucks are involved in.
Self-Driving Features and Safety:
While self-driving technology promises to reduce human error, it also brings new questions of liability in accidents. Determining fault becomes complex, especially if the vehicle’s systems malfunction.
Cybertrucks on the Road
As of 2024, Tesla has sold approximately 27,185 Cybertrucks, with projections suggesting significant growth. By 2026, Tesla aims to produce around 250,000 units per year. Considering Tesla’s overall production, there are millions of Tesla vehicles on roads globally, with the Cybertruck adding to this tally. If you look at Tesla’s website, you can see the Cybertruck was created for utility, not just its good looks. Seemingly, it would be useful in construction and industrial settings. Think of new colonies on mars!
